florence is playing coachella. popping up on soundtracks and trailers for massively popular flicks.  getting airtime on the radio. showing up on random USA channel tv shows. getting nominated for multiple mtv music video awards. and getting interviewed by autostraddle.

hell yes. finally getting the recognition she deserves after blowing up in the UK last yr and getting shortlisted for the mercury.

and then PMA did it (almost) for me, and i thought id expand on it a little here.

here’s the thing: I love Kings of Leon. And I freaking love when talented artists cover them.

Sex on Fire
Kings of Leon
Sugarlandtotally unexpected, right? and fantastic.
Hayley Davisgreat voice here. the rip is a little quiet, but it’s worth it.

Use Somebody
Kings of Leon
Bat for Lashes **** – no one does a slow burn like Natasha Khan.
Paramore **** s- surprisingly enjoyable. great acoustic version.
Karima Francis – still prefer Natasha’s version, but it’s damn good. quiet and sparse.

Knocked Up – Lykke Li and Kings of Leon (Rodeo Mash Up) – absolutely fantastic. i like this version better than either solo one.

You know what i also love?
–> Springsteen covers.

two of my fave covers of all time are below. crap, i could do a whole post on Springsteen & covers. but i’ll spare you for now. May have posted these before, but whatever:

Tortoise & Bonnie Prince Billy — Thunder Road***** – freaking brilliant
–> Springsteen — Thunder Road (acoustic)
Florence & Kid Harpoon — Going Down*****  – my best of 08. incredible.
–> the original — I’m going down

Swati — Im on Fire  – hell. yes.

okay, enjoy!

some tracks ive been obsessed with recently.  believe ive sent more than a few in my bi-weekly mp3 blasts (let me know if you want an add).

the Gossip – Are you that somebody? (Aaliyah cover) <— not a super new cover (i think i may have heard them do this back when i saw them with Mates of State in college), but a good recording of it. lets just say Beth Ditto kills it. So good.

holly miranda – Slow Burn Treason (ft Kyp Malone) <— holly teams up with TV on the Radio’s Malone for this awesome track that i cant help but find ridic sexy. think a low key TVOTR meets Cat Power or Feist circa Let It Die.

miike snow – Animal <— absolutely obsessed with this track. think Passion Pit meets… i dont know, something ridiculously accessible? and the beginning beat totally reminds me of Esau Mwamwaya & Radioclit’s The Very Best LP.  just try not to sing along to this one.

Florence and the Machine – Cosmic Love <— been a huge Florence fan ever since she covered Springsteen’s Going Down with Kid Harpoon last year

Kings of Leon – Pistols of Fire (Mark Ronson remix) <— brother bear (to S.ron, obvi) remixes everyone’s (okay, maybe just Europe’s) favorite rock band.  im still not sure why Americans arent obsessed with these guys, but maybe the association with the bigtime DJ will give them more credit with the mtv crowd?  listening to KOL always makes me think of Catfish Haven, too.  Good old Southern, bluesy rock.

Discovery – Carby (Feat. Ezra Koenig) <— more from the Vampire Weekend / Ra Ra Riot supergroup.  Heck of an enjoyable time. Still reminiscent of The Very Best, but it totally works.
