Ahh, year end. crisp winter nights, hot chocolate (now, with red peppers ala kat), new sweaters, snuggly scarves, wool socks, brisk runs, red noses, holiday cheer (and snark), and lists! Lists upon lists upon lists! who’s been naughty, who’s been nice; ingredients for jb’s mother’s ginger snaps; recipients of belated holiday cards, gifts for sister and parents, pumpkin beers ive yet to try… and last but not least, the best-of lists!!
now, to try and put these in any logical order would be ridiculous and unfair. and when i say the best of ’08, lets not go crazy trying to define what that means for albums released in 2006 in Sweden (thank god Robyn is finally getting some recognition) or the UK (ooh adele! mgmt!). lets just drop all the pretentious logistical stuff and say that here follow the tunes that i dug like mad in ’08.
some are just tracks, others are albums (i admit it, some cds i just didnt listen to all of – leona lewis, for example – and some i couldnt stop spinning). but all were tunes that will forever remind me of the following: early mornings driving on brick roads through baltimore, that giddy feeling you get when you realize youre smack dab in the middle of falling in love, packing up and moving all the way across the country, spending lazy nights with the roommies, blogging the multitudes of pop culture crap, running along the bay on the perfect afternoon – the lights just beginning to dim and everything illuminated by soft lights on the water, bike rides down hills at top speed, bike rides uphill and miserable, dance parties in soma till the early morning, road trips down route 1 in search of the perefct bag of cherries, sunday afternoons overlooking dolores park with a nora roberts novel and warm beet salad, grilling on my balcony while the sun goes down, and taking giant blindfolded leaps of proverbial cliffs…
Santogold – her s/t album just plain rocked. prob my most played of ’08. definitely the best show (no offense, wolf parade): l.e.s. artistes, shove it, say aha
wolf parade: spencer krug and dan boeckner are gods. brilliant show with listening party this year at the fillmore. at mount zoomer is a fantastic and thoughtful follow up to apologies… some favorites: call it a ritual, language city
mates of state – saw them for the third(?) time with santogold, and they’re still rocking the house. re-arrange us is lush and loud and never fails to make me smile: my only offer
leona lewis – bleeding love. here’s why: chelsie and mark
beyonce – single ladies. killer. i need to learn this dance yesterday.
adele – chasing pavements. i know this came out in the uk last year, but i dont care. love her.
katy perry – hot and cold. i cant believe she made it onto my list, especially after that awful song whose name i refuse to mention
lykke li – every track on youth novels rocked: little bit; im good im gone… oh, and here she is with kanye and santi white: gifted
rise against – re-education (through labor). i love to sing this LOUD
jukebox the ghost – okay, this might be last year’s jam, but it never ceases to make me smile: hold it in
florence and kid harpoon – going down (behind every brilliant song there’s a… springsteen). oh, and despite the subject matter, kiss with a fist was pretty awesome, too.
bon iver – skinny love. beautiful.
basia bulat – possibly my fave song of the year: in the night
passion pit – sleepyhead. along with skinny love, one of the best love songs ive heard in a very very long time
mgmt – oracular spectacular, electric feel, time to pretend, everyone’s favorite – and with good reason
ting tings – we started nothing – such a fun album: great dj
fleet foxes – was there any album so enjoyable this year? oliver james and he doesnt know why are absolutely gorgeous
tilly and the wall – still loyal: chandelier lake
conor oberst – still an amazing lyricist. cape canaveral
jenny lewis – i cant believe im admitting this, but i didnt really listen to this too much. but i loved tryin’ my best and the next messiah
kanye – 808s & heartbreak: heartless. it’s no secret im obsessed
britney – circus. ditto. if u seek amy. mannequin.
she & him – m ward is a longtime fave. zooey just makes it extra special. ridiculously accessible: you’ve really got a hold on me
death cab – i will possess your heart. love, ben gibbard style.
jace everett – bad things. true blood was a crazy graphic hypersexual and addictive train wreck of a show. with an amazing soundtrack (so forgive that this came out in ’06).
esau mwamwaya – the very best. my fave mixtape ever. get it up. funa funa.
lady gaga – just dance, vanity. so catchy.
miranda lambert – gunpowder and lead. wait, this came out last year. eh, who cares, it’s awesome.
chairlift – evident utensil. bruises. aughgghg
vampire weekend – everywhere (everything you could ever want in a fleetwood mac cover)
kings of leon – im not going to lie; i love sex on fire. it’s no on call, but it’s dark and broody and catchy as hell.
tv on the radio – shout me out. golden age. SO good.
thao nyugen – bag of hammers. sounds like: lazy afternoons on the grass/ wish this had come out when i was still in college
