I had no idea the movie, Battle Royale, was based upon a book of the same name. Originally written for a writing competition (and disqualified for it’s graphic / brutal nature), the novel (published in Japanese in 1999) was turned into an incredible movie. I remember seeing it in middle school and thinking it was brilliant. Reading the book now, though, i wonder if i could even comprehend back then what makes this so good.
i think what i like most about this is that it doesnt go into morality and what is right / wrong neccessarily. it’s somehow much more base – you can never know what someone else is thinking, and that fear of the unknown, that suspicion, that doubt, can drive you to do things you never thought you could. these 14 year olds are running around this island, and no one wants to kill each other, but no one wants to die, either. so in the end, what’s the answer? how is redemption found? does one student emerge victorious?i have a vague recollection of the ending, but for the most part im pretending i have no idea what happens, and i like it better that way. we all know im a sucker for a little romance, and obviously i want a happy ending, but still… im also really impressed that im about a hundred pages in and i havent started to skim yet. even the violent scenes are really well written. go figure. there’s just something very playful about the narrative, very self aware. i like that.
apparently, the lord of the flies has a similar premise, but ive never read that, so i wont even pretend to compare them. all i know is; this book is freaking awesome, as soon as i finish it, im going to be forced to dig through stacks of old dvds from beijing to find my copy of the movie.
currently listening to:
jay brannan – garrett got me hooked. adorable gay boy singing songs about love. great lyrics. this song’s a heartbreaker — Happily Ever After
catfish haven – my recent late night e-retail therapy buy. smooth and bluesey. this band makes me want to lie in tall grass, sweating under a hot summer sun, and drink a good cold beer with the people i love the most. this is a track from the album they have coming out in december, and if it’s any indication, the cd’s gonna rock — Set in Stone
oh, and if you’re interested, the battle royale trailer:
