the nytimes just published an article on summertime drinking in New York (read it here: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/16/nyregion/16drinking.html?_r=1&oref=slogin), and im not sure I agree. They start the article off with a Santa Cruz native expressing wonder at the fact that so many places in NYC are byob, and that you can essentially drink all the time on the east coast, and that this would never happen in california. ummm, false.
isnt this dude from santa cruz? where ppl practically smoke up on the street? now, i like a glass of wine here and there, but we all know im mostly a two beer queer who likes to switch to water after my first hour or so. that being said, a couple of observations:
1. drinking in the park, whether it be NY’s Bryant or Mission Dolores here, is not uncommon. Ive personally never before seen as much hedonism as goes down each sunday on 18th and dolores. come on. pot truffles, open containers, massive piercings… talk about regretting things monday. eek.
2. the norcal dude quoted in the article is right about one thing. ive said it before and ill continue to say it: San Fran is sorely lacking in BYOBs. I miss philly! so many amazing restaurants (mercado, pumpkin, the list goes on….!!!) and all without corkage fees. now i get that a lot of this has to do with liquor licenses on the east coast, but seriously, is it too much to ask for this city to tone down the casual sale of booze? i cant go into a supermarket or coffee shop without seeing a six pack or a tap or napa’s latest. im not really complaining (it’s nice to have options), but since when do coffee shops have happy hour specials? shouldnt the only drug they sell be caffeine? maybe this is just the conservative in me talking…
what’s your opinion? is the nytimes right, and is the big apple some mecca for hedonistic summertime debauchery? or are they completely overlooking the fact that most cities (and towns. and campuses. and railroad stops, while we’re at it) have similar events occuring around this time? maybe the difference is that while all the indie kids drink in Dolores Park, the yuppies are stumbling around the marina. Is the crowd at bryant all that different from the kids in dolores? doubtful. in fact, id be willing to bet we drink way better wine.
im okay with the fact that this post prob makes me look like an ass.
